Episode 17 – I Know What I Remember
Released: 7 June 2021
Duration: 59 minutes, 30 seconds
Central Casting Saucer Spotted Outside Louisville; a Colorado Campout Overhead Light Show; and a Terrifying Idaho Orb Encounter
Several really good cases to cover in this episode! A mother and daughter saw a right-out-of-central-casting flying saucer maneuvering over them in the early evening of December 11, 2020. They were in a large urban area just outside Louisville. And we hear from a Colorado camper who got more than he bargained for under the stars the night of May 13, 2021: a mass of seemingly connected white lights cavorting in the sky for several hours as he and a companion took in the spectacle. A Witness in Caldwell, Idaho on May 17, 2021 recorded an orb flying along that seemingly changed directions to fly towards him. It stopped momentarily over his house as he took cover under an awning in fear of what it might do next!
Also in this podcast, Paul Carr presents another in his series of Unidentified Science episodes. He covers the issues surrounding fallible human recall.
We also introduce you to our newest API Investigator, Roger Draper. He hails from the San Francisco area and, with a background in law enforcement, investigation, and his DOD experience, he’s a real bonus addition to the team!
Witness photos from Derby, UK
Case 21-017 is in the process of investigation, although we hope to have a report out in the next few weeks. Here are some photos that the witness took with an iPhone XS max, cropped and processed a bit by API. The cropped images have been scaled up without interpolation.
These were shot on 14 May 2021. The sky was overcast.
Any idea what this is?
Update (28 October 2021) : we now consider this case solved. See our Report of Investigation.
On 19 January 2021, at about 18:09 EST, we were shooting an International Space Station pass and experimenting with Direct Manual Focus (DMF) on the Sony A7 III mirrorless camera. The lens was a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 – a very good quality lens. The standard lens hood was attached, and video was captured at 4K resolution, 30 frames per second. We were looking to the East (you can see the constellation of Taurus in much of the clip). For a few seconds, a reddish, extended object “flew” through the frame, and was dismissed at the time as a lens flare. However, examination of the footage shows that is not a lens flare, so we’re baffled as to what it could be.
What do you think it could be?
Episode 16 – Lights, Camera, Action!

Lots of cases to discuss!
The API team is joined by two new members, Molly and Dan.

Our Experimental Supplemental Questionnaire
Why a Questionnaire?
If you have been following us for a while, you know that it is extremely difficult to directly collect data on UAPs. This is largely because of the completely unpredictable and transient nature of the phenomena, and because we struggle to form any informed hypotheses about what we should measure and how. It is important to address this, but progress is slow.
What we do have in abundance is witnesses – witnesses, and what they tell us they remember about their encounters. Although we recognize the serious problems in dealing with eyewitness testimony, we don’t regard such testimonies as “only” anecdotes, but as data – data about what humans – very complex and imperfect perception machines – remember.
